Though he battled for seven years to marry her, Henry is disenchanted with Anne Boleyn. She has failed to give him a son and her sharp intelligence and audacious will alienate his old friends and the noble families of England. When the discarded Katherine dies in exile, Anne stands starkly exposed. At a word from Henry, Thomas Cromwell is ready to bring her down. Over three terrify- ing weeks, Anne struggles fiercely in a web of conspiracy while the demure Jane Seymour stands waiting her turn for the poisoned wedding ring. --back cover

Bring up the Bodies

5 stars

Mantel's fictional retelling of the life of Cromwell continues, using the same conceits as the first book ("he" is always Cromwell). I assume no spoiler warnings are needed for a book describing events that took place 480 years ago: the book concerns the fall of Anne Boleyn, and Cromwell's role in making that happen. As Cromwell circles his prey and closes in, Mantel's writing is riveting and the verbal sparring is absolutely chilling. Reading it was an total pleasure.
