Pendant des années, les rumeurs les plus folles ont couru sur " la Fille des marais " de Barkley Cove, une petite ville de Caroline du Nord. Pourtant, Kya n'est pas cette fille sauvage et analphabète que tous imaginent et craignent.
A l'âge de dix ans, abandonnée par sa famille, elle doit apprendre à survivre seule dans le marais, devenu pour elle un refuge naturel et une protection. Sa rencontre avec Tate, un jeune homme doux et cultivé qui lui apprend à lire et à écrire, lui fait découvrir la science et la poésie, transforme la jeune fille à jamais. Mais Tate, appelé par ses études, l'abandonne à son tour.
La solitude devient si pesante que Kya ne se méfie pas assez de celui qui va bientôt croiser son chemin et lui promettre une autre vie.
Lorsque l'irréparable se produit, elle ne peut plus compter que sur elle-même...
Je m'attendais à un livre encore mieux vu les critiques globales, mais c'était bien. L'histoire d'une jeune fille vivant à l'écart, dans les marais. Assez contemplatif, on se sent vraiment avec elle dans sa vie sauvage.

This isn't the type of book I would normally read. My book club selected it. I almost abandoned it at several points early on. It finally engaged me slightly about a third of the way in. It's very well written. I admired that the entire time I was reading it. But it was SLOW!
The book tells the story of Kya, the "Marsh Girl". Her family lives in a shack in a North Carolina marsh. At age 6, her mother and most of her family abandon her. By age 7, her father abandons her too. The book follows her as she fends for herself and grows to adulthood. There are some relationships along the way, if you like that sort of thing. There's even an incident that may or may not be a crime. The latter part of the book revolves around that.
