Can't Be Satisfied (Paperback, 2003, Back Bay Books) 4 stars

Well Researched, Tedious to Read

4 stars

I got to admit, it's hard for me to rate this book. On the one hand, it seems very well researched and gives a balanced view of one of the main characters that made the Blues popular. It shows the good, the bad and the plain ugly and does not put Muddy on a pedestal, but instead also shows many of his character flaws.

Nonetheless, it was hard to read sometimes. I guess mainly because of all the research that went into it and the fact that it was written about 15 years after Muddy's death, it does not feel very personal, but more like an arrangement of facts and stories that were only experienced second hand by the author, and thereby third-hand by the reader.

Still, if you want to learn something about one of the major influences of the Blues and all that came thereafter (like the Rolling …

Klare Leseempfehlung!

Another Cosmere Novel!

5 stars

This was a nice tie-in with the Stormlight Archive novels, although you don't have to have read them to enjoy the story. However, there are a lot of Cosmere references in this one, and if you aren't at least a little bit familiar with the lore, you're missing out on many of the little details.

Since I haven't read all of the Cosmere novels yet, there were points in the story where I wished I knew more of the background, to understand the references. Also, it's been some time since I read the Stormlight novels, so I couldn't remember some of the stuff where I thought "wait, that sounds familiar..."

Still, absolutely a recommendation for every Sanderson / Cosmere fan out there!

Decent Summary of Modern Comfort-Creep

3 stars

I have to admit, I was sceptical about the book. Especially since it directly starts with the whole "to experience the world as our ancestors did, you should go hunting" narrative, something that doesn't sit well with me. I'm still not fond of this narrative, especially since I don't eat meat myself. But at least he tried to inject an ethical view into it throughout the book, even though he himself has to admit at least in a half-sentence that maybe not everyone should go hunting. Which shows you the privileged position from which he is talking. On the other hand, of course he is writing from a privileged position, because why write about modern comfort-creep otherwise?

The rest is wisdom about different aspects of our modern lives and why we feel so unsatisfied with it in a pretty condensed form. I've encountered it all before, especially if you're into …

Beautiful Story And Artwork

5 stars

Another fairy-tale like story set in the Cosmere, told by Hoid. A light read with beautiful artwork by Aliyah Chen. Some of the more obvious questions about how the world works are explained away tongue in cheek by Hoid, so the world building holds up even with some of the more unbelievable parts, if such things exist in a fantasy novel.

Complex, Elaborate World Building

4 stars

This was a very nice read and astonishingly complex world building for a single volume. My main issue with the book was that I needed the first half to figure out what was going on and then spent the second half to remember all the intricate details of the world Martha Wells created. I would definitely read another book from the same universe.
