This novel really set a hook early in with crazy parkour electromancer battles, then sort of jumps sideways in a disconcerting series of lines of love stories, epic familial curses, climate emergency, corporate empires, heroic coups and and and and.

Maeve looks like a princess and has monsters under her skin.

She works pretending to be a princess while the things inside her scrabble around her skull. She has friends and family. She knows about all the authors and characters in the canon and she has opinions about them. Maeve doesn't make great long-term choices. Maeve enjoys hurting. Maeve isn't broken, this is how she is. Maeve is part of her society, and it's not a dream.

A beautiful bookshop find!

The world is full and rich but we only have a small view in. Each story has a sad gravity that just draws it inevitably down.

There’s a thing that makes everything easier but it has a terrible price for everyone around you. And that logic drives every story headlong into tragedy. Loved it.

The characters are set, the setting is a character and maybe the plot sort of works.

Lotttta racing for the final payoff which is beautiful.

Third book, third voice, everyone has a new damn name and the dog has too many legs.

I’m probably gonna reread and maybe understand more of the ride I was on.

This little arc charms my heart as all of Becky Chambers books do.

The world is so big and the story so intimate, the climax a hidden tiny change in a conversation.

We start in the dark and move out into the light.

The journey is straightforward and well driven, you have to just relax into it and be carried along the clear path and enjoy the sights that are clearly visible along the way, well marked and labeled.

So many consequences. Mathematics of loss and grief and pain and duty.

The ending is a brief reprieve. I might need a beat before the next.

Great on its own, but what full of mirrors and inroads to the source. So clever and full of heart - not sitting on it's own cleverness
