This novel really set a hook early in with crazy parkour electromancer battles, then sort of jumps sideways in a disconcerting series of lines of love stories, epic familial curses, climate emergency, corporate empires, heroic coups and and and and.

Maeve looks like a princess and has monsters under her skin.

She works pretending to be a princess while the things inside her scrabble around her skull. She has friends and family. She knows about all the authors and characters in the canon and she has opinions about them. Maeve doesn't make great long-term choices. Maeve enjoys hurting. Maeve isn't broken, this is how she is. Maeve is part of her society, and it's not a dream.

The world is full and rich but we only have a small view in. Each story has a sad gravity that just draws it inevitably down.

There’s a thing that makes everything easier but it has a terrible price for everyone around you. And that logic drives every story headlong into tragedy. Loved it.
