In this first book of the Eternal Sky series we are introduced to Temu, Bansh (Dumpling), Edene, Samarkar-la, and Hrahima. They form a strong cast of characters (human, tiger-woman and horse) on an adventure in a well imagined and economically described universe. By the end of the book I wanted to know more of all their stories and look forward to reading the other two books in the series. The first book ends in a bit of a cliff hanger but that just makes me eager to read the next book.

The second book in the Kefahuchi Tract series is an excellent addition. A detective who looks like Einstein trails after Vic as he moves artifacts and clients into and out of the restricted Saudade Event zone.

"The hotels were emptying, the bars were filling up, surf noir baselines were bumping out of every open door." I read this line and want to hear some surf noir baselines. While sitting in the King's Palace Cafe in Memphis, Tennessee with all kinds of music playing and floating in the open doors. ♥️

"This idea of Being or human existence as having an inbuilt expiry date never sat so well with Sartre. He accepted it in principle, but everything in his personality revolted against being hemmed in by anything at all, least of all by death. As he wrote in Being and Nothingness, death is an outrage that comes to me from outside and wipes out my projects." Wonderful phrasing from Sartre about death.

4 out of 5 stars Good characters and great story, I look forward to reading more in this series. Black holes, pirates, mercenaries (guns) for hire and some romance too. Content Warning: There is consensual rough sex described several times. I recommend just skipping/skimming those sections if that isn't your cup of tea.

An interesting story blending archeology and current timelines.

Very good scifi about learning the language of the Star Eater species well enough to "jump" into one of them and then learn even more about them.

Many twists and turns along the way with good discussion of the ethics of "jumping" and how the other species use the Star Eaters to mine a material needed by all species for interstellar travel.

Lots of plot lines were filled in and we learn more about the lighthouse keeper's story along the way.

NX made appearances in the prior book, The Warm Machine, at the beginning and the end. Those same events are seen from NX's viewpoint this time around. In between, NX makes friends and grows on her own and with their help.

If Aimee writes them, I look forward to reading more books in this world

Interesting story exploring music, meaning, destiny and metaphysics. There are numerous central characters so the individual character development is not at deep as Robinson often achieves. But overall string characters development and very good world building.

I particularly liked the asides to the Reader imagining them living in varied situations and societies.
