The afterword is worth reading as the author goes into the challenges of writing "in the shadow" of a previous work or narrative (in this case it is a new perspective [Zoe's] on the events of "The Last Colony").

par·a·quel (PAR-uh-kwel) n.
A work of fiction that retells the events of an existing narrative from the point of view of a different character, typically running parallel in time to the original story rather than before or after it. Distinguished from a sequel, which continues the timeline forward, and a prequel, which precedes it. Blend of parallel + (se)quel.

Also TIL: hypertext and hypotext
1980s literary theory used the term "hypertext" to describe works derived from previous works ("hypotexts").
(e.g. Stoppard's "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" is a hypertext derived from the hypotext of Shakespeare's "Hamlet")
The terms were first coined by Gérard Genette in his 1982 book "Palimpsests: Literature in the Second Degree"
So a paraquel could be seen as a hypertext of the work it shadows.
